Our Story

My family and I moved to Alberta, Canada in December 2015 and our original destination was Fort McMurray. We met some fabulous Jamaicans (and some Jamaicans enthusiasts) in Fort McMurray who were promoting the Jamaican food and way of life in the -40⁰ weather. Adjusting to our new environment was difficult, especially because we were craving even a tuups (morsel) of anything Jamaican. So, we looked high and low for even a likkle piece a we culture in this small town some thousands of miles away from our island home.

After a massive forest fire forced us to leave Fort McMurray in May 2016, we relocated to Edmonton. Still eager to find anything and anyone Jamaican, we quickly discovered that there was a large-ish Jamaican population residing here. We deh everywhere! We found several Jamaican restaurants (and other places selling Jamaican products) as well as festivals that displayed reggae and other Caribbean genres of music. We also realized that many Jamaican artists performed regularly as well as some clubs with dancehall themes. It was like a huge explosion of the cultural dimension with Jamaica playing a very dominant role. We stumbled on some places and events that, as Jamaicans, we enjoyed especially as it made us feel a little closer to home. We found stage shows, good food, Jamaican-ish produce – it was all there once we looked hard enough.

So, we thought to ourselves, how can we create a space where people living in Edmonton can go to look for things Jamaican? With that objective, we decided to put together this one-stop-shop of sorts as a guide to assist Jamaicans and Jamaican enthusiasts (whether as newcomers or long-time residents) in Edmonton to help find the places of interest to us. This website will attempt to keep people in-the-know on what’s happening in Edmonton as well as learn about how others have lived and experienced this new home away from home. But, we are more than just an information hub, we also want to share personal stories about our collective journey to Canada.
